Discipleship = Friendship

I’ve delved back into some amazing OT stuff concerning what it means to pour oneself into another person whole-heartedly, 100%, with everything one can, jumpin’ over social gaps & bustin’ through cultural barriers. Some people might say Jesus was the example they always go to, but know that it was occurring LONG before Jesus walked the earth as Christ.

This first section is about just that:

"As soon as he had finished speaking to Saul, the soul of Jonathan was knit to the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul.  And Saul took him that day and would not let him return to his father's house.  Then Jonathan made a covenant with David, because he loved him as his own soul.  And Jonathan stripped himself of the robe that was on him and gave it to David, and his armor, and even his sword and his bow and his belt.  And David went out and was successful wherever Saul sent him, so that Saul set him over the men of war.  And this was good in the sight of all the people and also in the sight of Saul's servants."

This next section displays jealousy of God’s favor for someone that is a part of this authentic friendship:

"As they were coming home, when David returned from striking down the Philistine, the women came out of all the cities of Israel, singing and dancing, to meet King Saul, with tambourines, with songs of joy, and with musical instruments.  And the women sang to one another as they celebrated,

“Saul has struck down his thousands,
and David his ten thousands.”

And Saul was very angry, and this saying displeased him.  He said, “They have ascribed to David ten thousands, and to me they have ascribed thousands, and what more can he have but the kingdom?”  And Saul eyed David from that day on.

The next day a harmful spirit from God rushed upon Saul, and he raved within his house while David was playing the lyre, as he did day by day.  Saul had his spear in his hand.  And Saul hurled the spear, for he thought, “I will pin David to the wall.”  But David evaded him twice.

Saul was afraid of David because the Lord was with him but had departed from Saul.  So Saul removed him from his presence and made him a commander of a thousand.  And he went out and came in before the people.  And David had success in all his undertakings, for the Lord was with him.  And when Saul saw that he had great success, he stood in fearful awe of him.  But all Israel and Judah loved David, for he went out and came in before them."

We’ve had friendship, we’ve had jealousy, but who couldn’t use a little wedlock?

"Then Saul said to David, “Here is my elder daughter Merab.  I will give her to you for a wife.  Only be valiant for me and fight the Lord's battles.”  For Saul thought, “Let not my hand be against him, but let the hand of the Philistines be against him.”  And David said to Saul, “Who am I, and who are my relatives, my father's clan in Israel, that I should be son-in-law to the king?”  But at the time when Merab, Saul's daughter, should have been given to David, she was given to Adriel the Meholathite for a wife.

Now Saul's daughter Michal loved David.  And they told Saul, and the thing pleased him.  Saul thought, “Let me give her to him, that she may be a snare for him and that the hand of the Philistines may be against him.”  Therefore Saul said to David a second time, “You shall now be my son-in-law.”  And Saul commanded his servants, “Speak to David in private and say, ‘Behold, the king has delight in you, and all his servants love you.  Now then become the king's son-in-law.’”  And Saul's servants spoke those words in the ears of David.  And David said, “Does it seem to you a little thing to become the king's son-in-law, since I am a poor man and have no reputation?”  And the servants of Saul told him, “Thus and so did David speak.”  Then Saul said, “Thus shall you say to David, ‘The king desires no bride-price except a hundred foreskins of the Philistines, that he may be avenged of the king's enemies.’”  Now Saul thought to make David fall by the hand of the Philistines.  And when his servants told David these words, it pleased David well to be the king's son-in-law.  Before the time had expired, David arose and went, along with his men, and killed two hundred of the Philistines.  And David brought their foreskins, which were given in full number to the king that he might become the king's son-in-law.  And Saul gave him his daughter Michal for a wife.  But when Saul saw and knew that the Lord was with David, and that Michal, Saul's daughter, loved him, Saul was even more afraid of David.  So Saul was David's enemy continually.

Then the princes of the Philistines came out to battle, and as often as they came out David had more success than all the servants of Saul, so that his name was highly esteemed."

I would write more, but I think the Word has said oodles.

Good stuff.

What is so cool right now is that the Holy Trinity is using me as a leader even when I'm not doing the hottest in my walk with Them. They are illuminating how anyone can be used as a vessel & advance the Kingdom, whether or not those people even follow Them. I've been humbled over the past few days & have a lot of stuff to work out, but at the same time, the mighty God of Israel is blessing me with opportunities to share about what He's done for me that is & will be for His pleasure.

Side note: I've never thought about using the pronoun 'Them' to describe God the Father, God the Son, and God the Spirit, so I thought I'd try it out. I won't be offended if you think I'm wrong, misguiding, or straight up blaspheming, just call me a liberal & be done with it.

I'm also learning about God's pleasure. As Chris read last night & I wrote today, here Paul writes Timothy (II Timothy 2:1-5 for you numerics):

You then, my child, be strengthened by the grace that is in Christ Jesus, and what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men who will be able to teach others also. Share in suffering as a good soldier of Christ Jesus. No soldier gets entangled in civilian pursuits, since his aim is to please the one who enlisted him. An athlete is not crowned unless he competes according to the rules. It is the hard-working farmer who ought to have the first share of the crops.

My place in this universe is to PLEASE God. How amazing is that! He is not vain, for He is "I Am that I Am." (thanks for beating that into my head, Fuller )

I'm pretty excited about life right now.

Something on my mind

So yeah, I'm pretty tired as of late. The amount of sleep I got Friday night (6 hours), Saturday night (5 hours), and last night (6 hours) is kicking my butt right now. I usually don't get too affected by lack of sleep, but this morning was rough. I've never fallen asleep in the shower before, but today, I encountered just that. was a first. You know the moment when the hot water finally turns into cold water? When it hit, I popped up like a badger from the game @ Chuck E. Cheese you're supposed to smash.

WARNING: SOAP BOX FOLLOWS – READ AT OWN RISK

The Summit Church has been an interesting time for me the past two weeks. To be a bit clearer, going back to a traditional congregation’s services was not only difficult but a totally different experience. To be honest, I went to hang out with numerous people that I knew from when I did participate in services, trips, etc. as well as new friends that I'm growing in God with (side note: never joined the Summit Church). Unfortunately, a lot of the leadership I know from Summit is now gone (
Lewie Clark, Eric Roberts, Mark Bridges, etc.). This turnover helped me transition away from that church & look for something that I knew God could use me for His Kingdom & not be a hindrance to others with my stepping away from the institution.  That's why I joined in on the creation of a local house church.

I will attend stuff there when I know certain guys & gals are in town because for me, that's what church is. We are coming together to worship Christ Jesus, but we get caught up in listening to one speaker for 45 minutes, music for 15 min., prayer for 2 min. (SUCH a bad cultural norm) & not getting to interact with one another. Don't get me wrong, individual & corporate worship of King Jesus is absolute right & necessary as His follower, but if people REALLY looked into why Christ chose only 12 regular guys to disciple & why he DIDN'T try to reach thousands with tons of sermons, our culture would be rocked to its foundation. Yes, he had sermons, but that was not his main focus. His focus was friendship, discipleship, fellowship, and an all-encompassing love that was not shaken.

Our house church has reached the end of its season & will be scattering around the country throughout the summer (one family is in Louisville already, one will be moving to Pasadena, CA, two will be moving to Chicago, and the final remaining family will be going to Conway). Since I'll be staying behind, God has revealed that I need to form a discipleship community with young guys (probably college, doesn’t have to be) once I get my own place this summer.

In the letter to the Romans, Paul wrote this (and I promise I’m trying to keep this in the accurate context): "Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and how inscrutable are His ways!"
(11:33 for you numeric people out there )

What this group will look, I have no idea. I’ve learned that 'I don't know' is okay. Our culture wants to know everything & fill in every gap with all the right answers, but ambiguity is just a part of God.

That's my story as of right now, and all I’m doing is trying to hold on to what God is doing in the central Arkansas area.
